As children, we have parents, teachers, coaches that are in our lives providing the support to empower our success. As we grow, it becomes a challenge for us to know what made us a success because of WHO we are vs what made us successful because of the influences in our circles. Sometimes we leave the very influences that supported success and collect influences that inhibit it. The skill of learning how to envision our success, reverse engineer it, and determine what influences we need to create that vision is important. The skill of building our support and influence like we had as children can be the decision that makes the difference.
It’s at the teen and young adult stages that we begin to truly learn the importance of building our own support teams and circles of influences. It’s also a lesson we revisit in the different phases of growth and life as adults. However, it’s at the teen age years where thankfully we can have our parents’ support to allow us to learn from our mistakes and victories. While inconvenient and uncomfortable for parents, this flexibility, support, and understanding and time of supportive guidance is invaluable and will shape their future. It’s easy to think your teen is capable and forget he/she are not all grown up yet. Your role and influence has not diminished but shifted in the need. You may not need to tell them what to do but help them realize and better focus on their intentions and create actions congruent with those intentions. As we learn the value of positive influence and experience negative influences we can begin to differentiate and appreciate those positive influences in our lives.
Without this awareness, having consistency, continuity and congruency is challenging to maintain. To know this tool of influence inside and out can mean being able to sustain growth and helping others grow as well as growing individually. What if we envisioned where we want to be and reverse engineered the circle of influence we need to support the decisions and actions to get there?
