When many parents think about Martial Arts, they think about kicking and punching, but there is so much more that martial arts teaches children in our hectic multi-media world.
For starters, martial arts teaches creating a strong positive mind set which increases good habits, thereby resulting in positive decisions and creating the right actions. For beginners, one of the first areas of growth parents see in their child in martial arts is FOCUS. These skills are not only martial arts, but more importantly, LIFE SKILLS. One accomplishes what one focuses on in life. Increasing a child’s ability to focus, increases their list of personal victories and accomplishments and that can change their lives.
When striking a target or breaking a board, students do not focus on the surface of the target but see through the target. Their goal is not to just accomplish minimum standards but to exceed minimum standards. The act of penetrating a target is the goal of surpassing minimum standards and accomplishing new personal heights.
All the training seek to motivate responsive actions in thinking through building reflexes and confidence. Part of the focus training is to seek to motivate children to build their mental reflexes and become more responsive with mind, heart, and body. Some of the external signs parents rave about are seeing their child’s focus increase is responsive eye contact, acknowledging communications, and the child’s ability to initiate verbal responses. Kids start to take pride in their personal strength to take care of themselves instead of being taken care of. Children begin to see themselves in a different relationship with the world.
Through fine tuning focus and mindset, children in martial arts learn to tune out distractions, prioritize demands, feel confident while struggling to a new level, look for the comebacks with setbacks, and push outside comfort zones to grow. Martial arts helps children understand the value of challenging themselves and others, knowing when to support others, and how to enjoy success. These are all the benefits children accomplish in the martial arts every day.
